Energizing face mask

buddha says water the seeds of joy, contentment

starve the seeds of judgement, resentment.

what is left when a woman is geared up

fatigues and gold flowers dangling from her ears

in the dust of an iraqi annihilation

laboring for the protection of her children

who sit staring through the rupture formed in the wall of the modest home

waiting

she is tasked with de-mining

watching her every foot step forward

it could be the pounding of her heart that sets it off

when the mind cant rest

there is no peace

brave by force

she is wearing the footies that are skid proof given to you while in the hospital

an aqua blue

her wrist has a name band that she hasn’t yet removed

she is carrying a plastic see through bag of crumpled clothes

i think she is limping

but we are in the stacks of the library where there is little space to walk

she looks to the librarian and asks

“where are the fantasy books”

my jeep indicates 100 degrees

nearly home i am ruminating about something unproductive

i choose this route often for no reason

i am stopped at lights that have cameras

otherwise i may choose to go through

and in my haste

there is a skinny sweaty man without a shirt walking in between the lanes of cars cup in hand

leaning over as if to tip

my internal complaining is stricken

i turn off

park

and call for him

our interaction is brief and incidental, or so it seems

i offer something

he expresses gratitude

then leans forward and continues on
